Tomasz Konieczny

Tomasz Konieczny was born in 1972 in Ŀodz, Poland, and initially studied acting at the National Film School there. He worked as an actor, including in various film and TV productions. He began his voice studies at the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and continued them at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber in Dresden. He débuted as a singer in 1997 at Posen Opera with Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) In 2002 he became a member of the ensemble at Mannheim National Theatre. From 2006-2014 he was a member of the ensemble at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, with roles including Golaud (Pelléas et Mélisande), Amfortas (Parsifal), Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), the Dutchman (The Flying Dutchman), Barak (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Balstrode (Peter Grimes), Falstaff and Escamillo (Carmen). He has been a regular guest at the Budapest Wagner Festival since 2006. In 2008 he made his acclaimed début as Alberich (Das Rheingold, Siegfried) at Dresden’s Semperoper. In 2015 he had a particular personal success in the title role of Berg’s Wozzeck at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, in 2017 he débuted at Milan’s La Scala as the Commendatore (Don Giovanni), he débuted in October of the same year at the Canadian Opera Company Toronto as Mandryka (Arabella), in 2018 he débuted at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse as Wotan (Die Walküre) and at the New National Theatre in Tokyo as the four villains (The Tales of Hoffmann). He has sung at the Teatro Real, the National Theatre in Prague, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opéra national de Paris, Bavarian State Opera, Salzburg Festival, the Metropolitan Opera New York, Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Edinburgh Festival, Canadian Opera Company, Bayreuth Festival and at Milan’s La Scala. The Wiener Staatsoper has been an artistic base since 2009. Major roles here include Jack Rance (La fanciulla del West), Wotan/The Wanderer (The Ring of the Nibelungs), Scarpia (Tosca), Mandryka (Arabella), Jochanaan (Salome), Telramund (Lohengrin), Don Pizarro (Fidelio). In 2019 Tomasz Konieczny was appointed to the professional status of Austrian Kammersänger.
