Louise Alder studied at the Royal College of Music’s International Opera School where she was the inaugural Kiri Te Kanawa Scholar. She won the Young Singer Award at the 2017 International Opera Awards and the Dame Joan Sutherland Audience Prize at the 2017 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. She also won the 2015 inaugural Young British Soloists’ Competition, and is the recipient of Glyndebourne's 2014 John Christie Award. Recent successes have included Gretel (»Hänsel und Gretel«) at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich; the title role in »La Calisto« for the Teatro Réal, Madrid; Sophie (»Der Rosenkavalier«) for Glyndebourne and the Welsh National Opera; Lucia (»The Rape of Lucretia«) and Zerlina for Glyndebourne; Ilia (»Idomeneo«) and Pamina for Garsington Opera; Euridice in Luigi Rossi’s »Orpheus« for the Royal Opera; Rapunzel (»Into the Woods«) for the Théâtre du Châtelet and Gilda (»Rigoletto«), Susanna (»Le nozze di Figaro«), Pamina (»Die Zauberflöte«), Despina (»Così fan tutte«), Cleopatra (»Giulio Cesare«), Romilda (»Serse«), Sophie (»Der Rosenkavalier«), Gretel and the title role in »The Cunning Little Vixen« for Oper Frankfurt. On the concert platform this season she sings the title role in »Theodora« at the BBC Proms (Arcangelo/Cohen); the title role in »Semele« on tour (Monteverdi Choir/Gardiner); »Messiah« (Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin in performances staged by Frederick Wake-Walker); »Carmina Burana« (LPO/Rhorer); Brahms’ »Ein Deutsches Requiem« (RLPO/Petrenko); Jessie in Turnage’s »The Silver Tassie« (BBC Symphony Orchestra/Ryan Wigglesworth).
She has also appeared at the Aldeburgh, Edinburgh, St Magnus and London Handel Festivals and to the BBC Proms with particular highlights including the title role in »Semele« (OAE/Rousset); Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, »West Side Story«, Sophie and Marzelline (BBC Proms); Poulenc's »Gloria« (Hallé Orchestra/Macelaru); Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 3 (LSO/Elder); Poppea in »L'incoronazione di Poppea« (Academy of Ancient Music/Egarr); Israelitish Woman in »Samson« and an all Handel programme at the Edinburgh Festival (Dunedin Consort/Butt) and Bach’s »St John Passion« (Royal Northern Sinfonia/Bicket).
Louise is also a passionate recitalist, appearing at Wigmore Hall, the Musikverein in Graz, the Frankfurt Opera, Madrid’s Fundación Juan March, Birmingham's Barber Institute, the Bath Mozart Festival and the Brighton and Oxford Lieder Festivals and in the Perth Concert Hall with pianists Helmut Deutsch, Joseph Middleton, Gary Matthewman, John Paul Ekins, Roger Vignoles and Matthew Fletcher.
